MONROE, La. – The ULM men's golf team has been recognized for its achievements in the classroom and its graduation retention rates by the NCAA, as the Warhawks were named recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award by the NCAA National Office this week.
The Warhawks earned a perfect 1,000 score – one of only 944 programs across the country in all sports to do so.
“I am very pleased to see our guys doing well with their education and also their commitment to their studies,” ULM head coach Tim Baldwin stated. “This is a strong statement about our student-athletes and I couldn't be happier for the University to have this level of recognition.”
The NCAA Public Recognition Award is bestowed on teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports in the 2014-15 academic year.
“We want to ensure college athletes are getting the most out of their experience, and academics are a top priority in this effort,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “The teams honored today earned recognition by making a commitment to success in the classroom as well as in competition. We celebrate their achievement and dedication to preparing themselves for life after college.”
In all, a total of just 1,071 Division I teams across all sports (649 women's teams and 422 men's or mixed squads) received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the 2014-15 academic year. To earn the award, the team is required to score in the top 10 percentile of their sport, which fell somewhere between a 983 to a perfect 1,000 depending on the sport.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It also measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
