MONROE, La. – Monday morning's practice was efficient for the ULM football team as they returned to fall camp following a Sunday spent off the field as the second half of preseason camp opened.
Following Sunday's team and positional meetings, which came on the heels of Saturday's scrimmage, head coach Matt Viator and the staff used Monday morning as a way to re-focus in the team and re-install ideologies from the opening two weeks of camp.
“We tried to get back out on the field and back into the routine this morning. We practice twice today, so we cut out a little from the morning practice so that we can get two good sessions in again today,” Viator stated.
Viator added that the staff will now go over all of the installation in the coming days during practice, combining plays and schemes from multiple practices over the first two weeks into single practices in the second half of camp.
Following Saturday night's scrimmage, the staff was able to watch the film to breakdown the positives and negatives on both sides of the ball.
“I loved the effort. I thought we handled the ball well in the weather conditions,” Viator said in regards to the scrimmage. “We have to get more consistent throwing and catching, and we have to be more consistent from a pass-rush standpoint. The run stuff I was pleased with (on both sides of the ball). The offense at time ran the ball well and the defense at times stopped the run. It wasn't ideal throwing conditions, but we need to clean that up.”
Daily practices will continue to take place mornings from 8:40-10:55 a.m. on the practice fields and are open to the public. The team will also continue hour-long walk-throughs until August 17 (most nights), beginning at 7:20 p.m. inside JPS Field at Malone Stadium. The second and final scrimmage of the fall comes Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. following this week's practice schedule.
ULM classes begin on Monday, August 22, with the Warhawks moving to afternoon practices that week, culminating in the ULM Athletic Department's 'The Pursuit' event on Thursday, August 25. Information about The Pursuit can be found at ulm.edu/thepursuit.
