MONROE, La. – Tuesday morning's practice was short but effective as the ULM football team completed its first run of three straight practices during fall preseason camp.
The Warhawks went through full-padded practices Monday morning and Tuesday morning, in addition to a full practice Monday night for the first time. Previously, camp had featured nightly walk through. Head coach Matt Viator continued to praise the improvement of his team on both sides of the ball.
“I think we are progressing. We are getting better. It's something that we've talked about. We have to play with energy, but play with energy for long periods of time,” Viator stated. “That's what we are trying to get out of the guys right now, and I think we are improving on that.”
Tuesday ended with a competitive one-on-one drill featuring a pylon at the end of the team-formed tunnel that one player battled toward while the other tried to protect the pylon.
“It's a great drill. It's one-on-one, but you are working on kickoff and kick return at the same time. It was a good way to end practice on a competitive note and I thought they did a good job. The players have fun with it.”
Daily practices will continue to take place mornings from 8:40-10:55 a.m. on the practice fields and are open to the public. The team will also continue hour-long walk-throughs until August 17 (most nights), beginning at 7:20 p.m. inside JPS Field at Malone Stadium. The second and final scrimmage of the fall comes Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. following this week's practice schedule.
ULM classes begin on Monday, August 22, with the Warhawks moving to afternoon practices that week, culminating in the ULM Athletic Department's 'The Pursuit' event on Thursday, August 25. Information about The Pursuit can be found at ulm.edu/thepursuit.
