HOUSTON - The ULM softball team is set to compete in the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic on Friday and Saturday, taking on Wisconsin, Princeton, Sam Houston State and host Houston.
NOTABLES
Last time out: ULM finished the Central Arkansas Invitational with a 3-1 mark after defeating Western Illinois 1-0 on Sunday morning with a walk-off victory in the eighth inning. Deadlocked at zero going into extra innings, ULM's Cheyanne Lyon tripled with one out before Melanie Coyne singled back up the middle moments later to give the Warhawks the walk off win.
Road Hawks: The Warhawks are in the middle of a three-week road trip. Going into the weekend, the team has eight games left in the trip, with the final road series serving as the opening Sun Belt Conference matchup against UTA.
Wisconsin: Wisconsin has lost only two of its 14 games to date, falling to James Madison University and Boston College. The Badgers have yet to play a home game this season and hold a 9-2 record for neutral site games.
Princeton: The Tigers have yet to open their season and are set to play ULM as their season opener. In the 2016 season, Princeton ended the season with a loss in the NCAA Regional to Longwood.
Sam Houston State: The Warhawks previously faced Sam Houston State during the Mardi Gras Invitational, where ULM shut out the Bearcats. Since the Mardi Gras Classic, Sam Houston State has gone 5-5 and is on a five-game winning streak heading into the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic.
Houston: Houston is 7-11 on the season, having played 12 of their 18 games at home at the Cougar Softball Stadium. The Cougars have lost four of the last six games, but most recently captured a win over No. 5 Texas A&M.
FROM COACH LYON
"We are looking forward to testing ourselves this weekend. Power Five school Wisconsin is off to 12-2 start this year and Princeton played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Houston is coming off a win over nationally ranked Texas A&M and Sam Houston has won three straight. Winning the weekend would be a great achievement for us as we look to continue the early success we have had this season."
