MONROE, La.-ULM baseball head
coach Jeff Schexnaider finalized his early signing class with the addition of
three players from Hinds Community College on Thursday. Left-handed pitcher Fraser
Adams, right-handed pitcher Brent Gay and shortstop Jason Hicks all signed
National Letters of Intent to play for the Warhawks beginning with the 2011 season.
The signing of Adams, Gay and Hicks
brings ULM's class during the early signing period to 10 players.
"I could not be more pleased
with the group of student-athletes that we have already signed this year,"
Schexnaider said. "This class has a chance to be really special. Coach (Cory) Barton, Coach (Lantz) Wheeler
and the rest of our staff put a lot of time in and did a great job recruiting
these players. All of these student-athletes
are not only great baseball players, but they are also the kind of young men we
want to represent our program in the classroom and in the community."
Adams went undefeated in his
freshman season at Hinds posting a perfect 7-0 mark on the mound. The native of
Jackson, Miss., appeared in 18 games and finished the season with a 4.86 ERA
and 52 strikeouts over 65 innings of work. Adams finished the season with a 3.3
strikeout-to-walk ratio.
He was named to the
Mississippi Private School Association All-Star Game following his senior
season at Madison Ridgeland Academy. He also earned a pair of all-conference
honors in both baseball and basketball and represented Mississippi in the
Junior Sunbelt Classic.
"Fraser is just a winner,"
Schexnaider said. "You know that every time he steps on the mound you are going
to have a good chance to win that game.
He is a very competitive young man and should help our staff
immediately."
Gay also posted an impressive
win-loss record for the Eagles finishing the year 6-1 with 26 strikeouts over
13 appearances and 43.2 innings. The native of Jackson, Miss., was an all-state
selection as a senior at Jackson Academy and was a two-time all-conference
honoree.
"Brent is another big physical
pitcher in this class," Schexnaider said. "He has the ability to throw with
high velocity that we feel will increase before his time here is done."
Hicks had a solid freshman
season for the Eagles last season batting .353 with 14 doubles, two triples, eight home
runs and 46 RBIs over 53 games. The native of Brandon, Miss., also proposed
problems on the bases for opposing teams stealing 15 bases in 18 attempts.
He was selected to play in the
Mississippi High School Athletic Association All-Star Game following his senior
season at Brandon High School where he was named Team MVP.
"Jason is a very versatile position player,"
Schexnaider said. "We feel like he could play any position on the infield as
well as both corner outfield spots. He
has put up some good numbers in Junior College and we feel like he will help
our lineup in a variety of ways."
