ULM Track & Field BIO
Stephen Saenz enters the 2016-17 school year in his 1st season as an assistant coach with the Warhawk track & field program. His main focus is Shot Put, Discus, Hammer and Weight Throws.
He comes to ULM after spending time at Michigan where Saenz helped coach Joe Ellis to a new program record in the weight throw while the Wolverines completed their best conference season since 2008, earning a Big Ten runner-up finish during the outdoor season and coming two points shy of that same placing during the indoor championships. During the outdoor meet, U-M was the only Big Ten school to score in each and every throwing event (discus, javelin, shot put, hammer), and Ellis went on to compete at the NCAA Championships in his redshirt freshman season.
In his first year at U-M, Saenz helped Derek Sievers earn second team All-America honors in the shot put, where he finished 11th at the NCAA Indoor Championships, and also helped Cody Riffle pick up honorable mention recognition after competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Sievers also set the U-M indoor program record, while Riffle owns the top outdoor mark all-time.
The Rio Grande City, Texas, native was one of three men to compete in both the shot put and discus at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships, and he has competed on the International stage on several occasions for his native Mexico, including at the 2012 London Olympics.
