MONROE, La. - The ULM football team worked
out for two hours and scrimmaged for nearly 30 minutes on Friday afternoon
inside Malone Stadium. After working out in helmets and shorts on Monday and
Wednesday, the Warhawks spent Friday's session in full pads.
"I think we got something done in terms of
installation more than anything else," head coach Todd Berry said. "That is a
big part of these first couple of practices. We will continue to install
systems, knowing that were really aren't going to be perfect. Certainly the
defense is far ahead of the offense, because they are in year two of
installation."
Throughout today's work on the field, the
defense unit excelled and made numerous sacks and stop behind the line of
scrimmage, especially during the live scrimmage portion of the drills.
"I am excited about some of our linebackers who
are playing fast and physical," Berry said. "Every time you look up they are
making plays. Their success has a lot to do with the defensive scheme, because they
are getting a chance to pop free and make a play."
After practice Berry discussed with his team
the importance of giving their full effort and being aggressive on every play,
even if they don't fully understand a new play.
"I told the players today that each position
coach is looking for execution, technique, and fundamentals; more than anything
else," Berry said. "I told the players, 'I want you to look down in your heart
and see how hard you are willing to play, even if you don't know what you are
doing, at least do something fast and physical.'"
"In terms of attitude and mentality I am very
pleased with where we are at," Berry said. "I am more pleased because we are
further ahead along those lines than I thought we would be. I think the players
are starting to give themselves up to their coaches and I see the trust level
that is starting to develop."
