MONROE, La. - The ULM football team continued its preparations for the 2010 season opener against Arkansas with a two-hour workout Friday morning on the grass practice fields. Friday marked the final day that the team will be split into two groups - the newcomers and select returners will practice this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

"One of the neat things from a coaching standpoint in relation to this group is that they are highly coachable," head coach Todd Berry said. "If you ask them to do something, generally they will respond in the appropriate fashion."

Following a sluggish opening practice of fall camp on Thursday, Berry was quick to praise his players today. Quarterbacks Kolton Browning and Trey Revell drew high remarks from Berry as they battle for the starting job.

"I think we came out with a real good mindset today," Berry said. "A lot of the rust that was here yesterday was knocked off today. We had a good practice on both sides of the football and that's hard sometimes as a head coach. Generally one side has a little better day than the other, but I thought we had a good day on both sides."

The Warhawks will practice as a complete team on Saturday and Sunday in shoulder pads and helmets before going in full pads for the first time on Monday.

"What you will see tomorrow is the varsity players embrace the young guys and try to bring them along and you'll see the young guys go 'Oh my gosh, what just happened to me,'" Berry said. "I kind of warned the young guys last night - not to scare them, but to prepare them - that when they get together for this afternoon's practice it needs to be ramped up in intensity. We've got a nice little rhythm about us and these younger guys are not going to understand that until they see it, and once they see it they are going to be in shock. That is going to be the big challenge for them tomorrow. The older guys are going to be hitting it and the younger guys are going to have the deer in the headlight look."
