ULM Works Out in Full Pads for First Time

Football

MONROE, La. - The ULM football team worked out in full pads for the first time of fall camp on Monday.  Also a first of fall camp, the Warhawks practiced on the turf in Malone Stadium.

"It is always good to get out in full pads," head coach Todd Berry said. "I think it is exciting for the players and it's certainly exciting for the coaches. It is the only time that you can get a true evaluation of the individuals and the team chemistry. There were some good hits today. We will go back and watch the tape and obviously there are some corrections to make because of the information overload that they are on right now."

Five newcomers took part in a right of passage after practice as the black stripe that was put on their helmet prior to camp was removed by their designated big brother on the team. Offensive lineman Demiere Burkett, running back Centarius Donald, safety Roland Veal, defensive end Kentarius Caldwell and wide receiver Je'Ron Hamm all had their helmet stripes removed following Monday's practice.

"We do this to honor the guys that come in and show that they are willing to put forth the effort and have the intensity to say that they are a Division I football player," Berry said. "All the newcomers came in with the stripe on their helmet and they will lose it as they prove to the team that they are prepared.  Once they get the stripe off they are truly part of the team because they have proven all the things we needed to see."

The Warhawks will go through their first two-a-day practice schedule on Tuesday. The team will practice on the grass fields in the morning before hitting the turf in Malone Stadium for the afternoon session.

"We are now looking for refinement now," Berry said. "From a coaches standpoint, we have some major competition going on right now. We're looking for a competitive nature in every practice. One of the things is not just making plays, but being a consistent play maker and I think that has significance. During two-a-days it gets a little more difficult to come out with a consistent effort, so you have a chance to really look down deep inside that young man and find out what they are all about."

ULM opens the 2010 season on Sept. 11 against No. 19 Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
