MONROE, La. - The ULM football
team worked out for two hours on the grass practice fields Wednesday afternoon
with most of the focus put on third down and the punting game. The Warhawks
will go through a two-a-day schedule on Thursday with the morning practice on
the grass and the afternoon session taking place in Malone Stadium.
For the second straight
practice, head coach Todd Berry worked outside the box with his quarterbacks. ULM's
four signal callers were out of their non-contact black jerseys and into regular
white jerseys. Redshirt freshman Kolton Browning beat out senior Trey Revell in
the spring for the starting spot heading into fall camp - Revell started 10 games
last season while sophomore Cody Wells started games at Kentucky and at Troy.
"I've got three quarterbacks
that I think can play at this level," Berry said. "I have to make some early
decisions and I want to make an early decision on this (quarterback starter) so
it doesn't drag out. The competition is stiff and all of them are doing good
things. I'm excited about all three and they only way that I can truly evaluate
them is when they are live. That is the only time when I know that their eyes
are moving appropriately, that they are avoiding rushes, they are getting plays
going the right direction and they are physically tough to go out there and
play. There is risk involved in everything, but to me the bigger risk is not
putting the right guy out on the field and the bigger risk is not having them
ready to play because part of playing the game is being physical."
While there is no timeline in
place for a starting quarterback to be named, Saturday's scrimmage could be the
deciding factor.
"I told the quarterbacks that
after Saturday's scrimmage I want to come out with a number one," Berry said. "I
think it is important from the team's perspective to know exactly what
direction they are headed. I'm not necessarily going to hold to it if it is
still close at that point. I'm hopeful that one will separate themselves
between now and the end of Saturday."
Three more Warhawk freshmen lost
their helmet stripes on Wednesday. Linebacker Ray Stovall and offensive linemen
Jeremy Burton and Jon Fisher had their stripes removed following practice. A familiar
face returned to practice on Wednesday as All-Sun Belt punter Scott Love
rejoined the team as a student coach to work with punters Aaron Munoz and
Conner Fryoux.
