ULM Downs Southeastern Louisiana in Home Opener

MONROE, La. -- Redshirt freshman quarterback Kolton Browning threw for 249 yards as ULM picked up its first win of the season, 21-20, on Saturday night (Sept. 25) over Southeastern Louisiana. Browning also gained 75 yards rushing and helped account for all three Warhawk touchdowns, two passing and one rushing.

Following a ULM (1-2) punt to begin the contest, Southeastern Louisiana (1-3) struck first with a seven-play, 71-yard touchdown drive. Tyler Beatty found Simmie Yarborough on a crossing pattern from five yards out for the score with 11:03 to play in the first quarter.

The Warhawks and Lions exchanged a pair of punts before ULM knotted the score with a 19-play, 89-yard touchdown march, capped by a 10-yard run by Browning. The Warhawks converted on 4-of-5 third downs on the drive and also picked up a first down on a fourth-and-six with an eight-yard pass from Browning to sophomore Brent Leonard on the 14th play of the drive.

The ULM scoring drive began with 8:40 remaining in the first quarter and ended on the first play of the second quarter.

The Warhawks took a 14-7 lead with 6:45 remaining in the second quarter as junior wide receiver Anthony McCall jumped on a fumble in the end zone. The score capped a six-play, 60-yard drive for ULM that took just over two minutes. On the scoring play, junior wide receiver Luther Ambrose caught a pass from Browning and gained 39 yards before fumbling the ball forward at the 16-yard line, the fumble was recovered in the end zone by McCall for a ULM touchdown.

McCall caught a career-high eight passes for 69 yards.

ULM took the seven-point lead into the intermission.

Southeastern Louisiana took advantage of a ULM turnover to tie the contest, 14-14, with 11:18 to play in the third quarter. The Lions took over on the Warhawk 14-yard line and scored on the first play of the drive as Beatty found Yarborough for their second touchdown connection of the contest.

Beatty was 20-of-41 in the contest for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Yarborough caught seven passes for 95 yards.

The Lions regained a seven-point advantage with a two-yard touchdown run by Zeke Jones. Southeastern Louisiana went 75 yards in nine plays in 4:03 to take a 20-14 lead with 2:08 to play in the third quarter. The Southeastern Louisiana extra point was no good. 

After the Warhawks defense forced a punt and gave the offense possession on the Lions' 47-yard line, ULM struck right away with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Browning to redshirt freshman Tavarse Maye on the first play of the drive. Maye out-jumped a Southeastern Louisiana defender in the end zone to tie the score, junior Radi Jabour's extra point gave ULM a 21-20 lead with 14:34 to play in the contest.

The Warhawks punted the ball to Southeastern Louisiana with 2:20 remaining, giving the Lions possession on their own nine-yard line. After Southeastern Louisiana picked up eight yards on its first three downs, sophomore linebacker Cameron Blakes sealed the ULM victory with an interception on fourth down.

Southeastern Louisiana linebacker Mark Newbill had a game-high 17 tackles, which tied his career-best.

ULM will return to the road next Saturday (Oct. 2) when the Warhawks travel to Auburn. Game time against the Tigers is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

On the game … “I've never been around a bad win, but that is probably the ugliest win I've certainly ever been around. We didn't start the first quarter off very well. We have a bunch of young guys out there and to Southeastern's credit they came out and did some different things. With a young football team, you get some of those blank stares sometimes. The penalties are really frustrating; the turnovers are really frustrating. I'm not used to that and I'm going to get to the bottom of that because we have to be a more intelligent football team. I challenged the team about it after the game because these are things we cover over and over again. I'm trying to smile about the victory, but it still sets me off about that kind of stuff. That's not the way we play and that's not the way I'm used to seeing a football team play.”
