TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - ULM had a respectable showing on the first day of the ITA Southern Regional Championships, held at the University of Alabama.
The day opened with both ULM doubles teams falling to SEC duos.
Medy Blankvoort and
Silvia Tomova fell 8-5 to
Marija Milutinovic and Caroline Rohde Moe of Ole Miss.
Sophie Rufyikiri and
Justyna Krol fell 8-5 to
Mary Jeremiah and Ebie Wilson from LSU. Both Blankvoort/Tomova and Rfyikiri/Krol are in action in Saturday's A-Double consolation bracket. Blankvoort/Tomova take on
Kristin Lewis and Lauren Caballero of Samford while Rfyikiri/Krol draw
Rebekah Adewumi and Laura Rojas of Jackson State.
In singles action, ULM took two of three matches played in the first round. Rufyikiri defeated LSU's Caroline Hudson (6-3, 6-4) and Blankvoort downed Jackson State's Karen Martinez (6-1, 6-1). In the second round ULM split the four matches they played in. Krol handled Kesica Jayapalan of Jackson State (6-1, 6-1) and Tumova defeated Amy Lowther of UAB (6-3, 6-0). Rufyikiri dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Ipek Birol of Tulane. Second seeded Rohde Moe (Ole Miss) defeated Blankvoort (6-3, 6-3).
By virtue of their wins in the A-Singles consolation draw, Krol and Tumova survive to play Saturday. Krol faces Emma Levy of Tulane while Tumova challenges Emily Flickinger of Auburn.
The action begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with two rounds of doubles and a round of singles.
