ULM Falls 4-3 to FAU in Extras to End Sun Belt Tournament Run

Softball

TROY, Ala. -- The 2013 ULM softball season came to a close Thursday at the Sun Belt Tournament Championship.  The Warhawks dropped a 4-3 tilt to Florida Atlantic in extra innings.

The Owls (28-28) loaded the bases in the bottom of the eight with one out.  Melissa Martinez floated a single through the middle of the infield to drive in the game's winning run.

ULM (19-35) grabbed an early 3-0 lead.  All three runs scored in the top of the third.  Courtney Dutreix hit a two-out double to left-center to put runners on second and third.  Kayla Prater, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a wild pitch.  During the play, Mackenzie Miller, who walked on the pitch, took second base while Dutreix took third.  One batter later, Haley McCall singled down the left field line to score both Dutreix and Miller.

Thanks to outstanding pitching by Stephanie Routzon, the Warhawks held the three-run lead until the bottom of the sixth.  FAU capitalized on three Warhawk errors in the inning and scored three runs.  The lone RBI came on Alison Milam's single through the middle.

The Owls had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.  With two down, FAU had runners at first and second.  Milam hit a line drive to the right-center gap but McCall made a fantastic grab on the run to force extra innings.

Miller recorded two hits.  Cayla Unverzagt, Faith Bohack and Janel Salanoa also had base knocks for the Warhawks.

Salanoa ends her career with the 10th-best batting average in school history (.305) and fifth in RBI (111).
