MONROE, La. – Both ULM and South Alabama saw each other’s starting pitchers go toe-to-toe on Saturday afternoon, with the visitors coming with the right hits at the right time on the way to handing the Warhawks a 4-1 defeat in the middle game of their Sun Belt Conference weekend series.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: South Alabama 4, ULM 1

Teams: ULM (9-24, 4-7 SBC)

             South Alabama (18-13, 8-3 SBC)

TURNING POINT

-ULM stranded six baserunners – one each in six different innings – as South Alabama was able to capitalize with a two-out run in the first inning that held up all afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

-South Alabama used a two-out walk in the top of the first inning to get its first baserunner, as Drew LaBounty stole second base and scored on Travis Swaggerty’s RBI single to give the visitors the lead. South Alabama held on to the advantage all afternoon, using a leadoff double to score in the eighth before a two-run homer in the ninth tallied the four runs.

-Following South Alabama’s first run in the top of the first, ULM put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the first before double play ended the threat. The Warhawks also stranded a one-out double in the second frame, left a runner at second in the fourth, and stranded a pair of singles in both the fifth and seventh innings.

-ULM tallied its lone run in the ninth when Turner Francis led off the frame with a triple and scored on Spencer Hemphill’s sacrifice fly moments later.

-The Warhawks were led by Chad Bell, who finished with three hits, including the double in the second inning, while Francis finished with two hits of his own. Hemphill (1-3) and Tyler Cox (1-4) had the other ULM hits in the loss.

-ULM starter Chase Beal (3-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over eight innings of work, while South Alabama starter Thomas Huston finished with a complete game seven-hitter, striking out nine batters.

-South Alabama finished with nine hits, led by two hits each from Dylan Hardy, Will Luft and Swaggerty.

UP NEXT

-The Warhawks and Jaguars wrap up the series with a 1:00 p.m. series finale on Sunday afternoon. ULM then hosts regional rival Louisiana Tech on Tuesday night at Warhawk Field.
