McKay Qualifies for Javelin Finals
EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Richard McKay secured a spot in the javelin final after recording a mark of 237-2 (72.29m) Saturday afternoon in the preliminary round of the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
McKay will join a group of 11 other competitors Monday night battling for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Track & Field team at the Summer Olympics in London (July 27 - August 12). The top four finishers, who have met the Olympic qualifying standard, will be named to the U.S. Olympic Track & Field team.
McKay had his most successful year in 2011, when he finished 13th in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to garner second team All-America honors. The DeRidder, La., native also won the Sun Belt Championship in 2009 on his way to being named the Louisiana Men's Track & Field Freshman of the Year. In all, McKay made four appearances at NCAA Regionals and a pair of trips to the NCAA Championships.
