NACOGDOCHES, La. - The final day of the Stephen F. Austin Invitational was canceled due to rain Saturday, washing out the singles' finals matches. Warhawk junior Medy Blankvoort and sophomore Silvia Tumova were both scheduled to play on the final day of competition after they both went undefeated during the first day.
On Friday, Blankvoort defeated Sheridan Currie of Sam Houston State in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) before outlasting Polina Konop from Northwestern State (6-3, 4-6, 10-5). She was scheduled to play Malena Gordo from SFA in the Flight A Championship before the weather scratched the match.
Tumova beat Lara Bogdan of Lamar in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) and Natalie Petaia from Sam Houston State (6-4, 5-7, 12-10). Turnova was set to take on Madeleine Mortimore of Sam Houston State in the Flight B Championship.
Also in action for the Warhawks this weekend was freshman Iris Van Leeuwen, who dropped her first two collegiate matches. She dropped a decision to Nadia Dubyanskya of Sam Houston State (6-2, 6-2) before falling to Daniela Simonova from Northwestern State (6-1, 6-2).
In doubles play on Friday, Blankvoort and Tumova dropped their first match in Flight A Doubles to Konop and Nataly Krutova from Northwestern State (9-7). However, after a bye in the bottom part of the bracket, they knocked off Tatyana Postnikova and Dubyanskaya of Sam Houston State (9-7) to win the back draw of Flight A Doubles.
Head Coach Terrence De Jongh's team will be back in action on October 5, as they head to the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational.
