MONROE, La. - The ULM Warhawks (4-11, 0-6 Sun Belt) dropped their sixth straight match Sunday afternoon falling to 20th-ranked Western Kentucky (20-3, 6-0 Sun Belt) in a 3-0 Lady Toppers sweep.
Senior outside hitter Samantha Morse recorded nine kills, tying her with WKU's Haley Bodway and Paige Wessel for the match high. Junior right side hitter Blanca Ocana dished out six kills, 10 assists, and recorded a block assist. Marcela Araya paced the defense with 12 digs.
The first set saw four ties and two lead changes. ULM led 5-1 before Western Kentucky rallied to even things up at eight. ULM led as late as 18-14, but WKU would battle all the way back and outscored ULM 11-3 to close out the set, 25-21.
In the second set, the Lady Toppers established early control, erupting to a 5-0 lead. They would remain in control of the set and go on to win 25-14 and go into the break with a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set started very similar to the first set, with both teams battling early for control. The Warhawks started the set 3-0 before Western Kentucky tied the match at four. The action remained back-and-forth before ULM surrendered the lead after a 13-all tie. Western Kentucky capitalized on big kills from Wessel and Jordyn Skinner during a match-closing 12-4 rally to earn the sweep with a 25-17 victory in the final set.
The Lady Toppers' Melanie Stutsman chipped in 28 assists. Wessel recorded a .600 hitting percentage, hitting nine kills on 15 attacks with no errors.
ULM goes on the road for a Friday night match at South Alabama and closes the trip Saturday night at Troy. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
