MONROE, La. -- ULM (0-0) tennis will look to start the spring with a win over Central Arkansas (0-2). Head Coach Terrence De Jongh will lead a young but experienced roster as the Warhawks look to improve on last season's 15-4 spring season. The Warhawks took its first round battle with Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt Tournament before falling to Denver.
Last season, ULM started 4-0 in the spring including winning its opener, against McNeese State, 6-1.
Scouting the Sugar Bears
Central Arkansas will play five matches in three days concluding with ULM on Sunday. UCA lost to Arkansas State, 6-1, and UALR, 5-2 in Little Rock on Thursday. On Saturday UCA lost 4-3 at Louisiana Tech. Head Coach Jeff Borengasser is in his second season at UCA. Prior, he spent seven season at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo as the men’s and women’s tennis coach. The Sugar Bears finished last season 7-14, its best Division I season. Kristina Horsikvan led UCA last season with an 11-9 record. Allison Murphy went 9-11 while Sasha Ruocco went 8-13. K. Horsikyan and Ruocco went 13-7 in doubles in 2012.
Central Arkansas vs. ULM Series
ULM holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series with the last meeting last spring, which the Warhawks won 4-0.
Medy Blankvoort went 7-1 in singles and 8-3 in doubles during the fall season. Sophie Rufyikiri went 6-0 in singles and 4-1 in doubles. Silvia Tumova went 7-0 in singles and 4-4 in doubles. Justyna Krol went 6-1 in singles and 6-2 in doubles. Iris Van Leeuwen went 3-5 in singles and 6-0 in doubles.
Junior forward Medy Blankvoort went 16-1 last season and pushed her career record to 46-16 on her way to an All-Sun Belt selection. Blankvoort collected a winning streak of 16 matches overall which included her victory over Denver's Emma Isberg in the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Blankvoort was also named to the 2011-12 Sun Belt Commissioner's List.
Coach Terrence De Jongh has not lost a home-opener in his six seasons at ULM. Last season, the Warhawks disposed of McNeese State 6-1. In his first season at ULM, his program cruised past Grambling State, 7-0.
The Warhawks do not have a senior on the roster but Coach De Jongh does posses a wealth of experience. All but one of the Warhawks have competed at ULM, freshman Petra Harakova joined the team at semester.
ULM's roster does not contain one player from the United States. The Warhawks boast student-athletes from five different countries. Furthest away from home is Sophie Rufyikiri who is 8,155 miles away from her hometown of Bujumbura, Burundi.
