MONROE, La. -- After one season at the helm of the Nicholls State volleyball program, former ULM assistant coach Patrick Hiltz has been hired as the Warhawks’ head volleyball coach announced today by Bobby Staub, ULM’s director of athletics. Hiltz’s appointment is pending approval by the University of Louisiana system’s Board of Supervisors.
Hiltz will also guide the volleyball program through its inaugural season of sand volleyball this spring.
“It is great to be back at ULM, but honestly I never felt like I really left as I followed the football team’s amazing season,” said Hiltz. “I am also excited to be back because ULM gave me my first coaching opportunity at the Division I level and I am excited to lead the Warhawks. With that being said, I will be forever grateful to Nicholls State for my first head coaching opportunity. NSU as well as the Thibodeaux community will also have a place in my heart.”
The 2002 UNLV graduate guided the Colonels to the 2012 Southland Conference Tournament as the league’s No. 7 seed. Outside hitter Kathryn Stock was named to the Southland Conference’s All-Academic second team, becoming the first player since 2009 to earn SLC All-Academic honors.
“We are excited to have Coach Hiltz on board as the leader of the Warhawk Volleyball program,” said Staub. “We are confident that he will do a tremendous job leading our program.”
Prior to his stint at ULM as an assistant coach, Hiltz
served as an assistant at Phoenix College in Arizona, where with the Bears he
aided the team to a runner-up finish in the 2010 NJCAA Division II regional
championships and third-place finish the year before.
While in Arizona, Hiltz gained valuable experience with traveling volleyball clubs, with stints as the head coach of the 15-Elite team for the Arizona United Volleyball Club and for Club Zea. At the helm of both teams he amassed a record of 11-3 at the prestigious Colorado Crossroads Tournament.
The California native’s high school coaching experience began when he was a varsity player, becoming an assistant coach for the freshman team at San Marcos HS in Santa Barbara. From that point he has worked at high schools in Nevada and Arizona, along with coaching the Northern Arizona University club team.
