SOFTBALL AROUND THE HORN
Hamby Rakes in Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Honors
Samantha Hamby’s stellar performance in 13 innings of work earned her Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors last week. She becomes the first Warhawk to garner a weekly Sun Belt award since Brianna Love was named player of the week in 2011. She is the first pitcher to win an award since Lindsay Rittenhouse in 2007. Hamby went all nine innings in game one, including 4.1 before allowing a hit. She dealt four more innings of relief in the winning effort in game two.
Warhawks Sweep Troy Saturday Doubleheader
ULM needed two things to sweep Troy on April 5: Vanessa Garcia and extra-innings. The freshman hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth in game one and had the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap.
Rain Washes Out Sunday Finale
Showers and thunderstorms forced ULM and Troy to cancel the series finale this past Sunday. It was just the second time this season the Warhawks have missed a game because of the weather.
Miyuki Navarrete has tied her ULM 5th-best mark of 30 steals from 2012. She needs 19 more to tie Brenda Dawson’s single-season mark. In the career records, Navarrete now ranks fourth all-time, needing just eight more to tie Amy Pezdek’s school record of 83.
Scouting the Warhawks
Sidney Coy now has a team-best .367 average, but Faith Bohack leads the regular starters with a .348 mark. Bohack paces the offense with 23 RBI while Vanessa Garcia ranks second with 20. The two share a team-high five homers with Hollie Letourneau. Samantha Hamby has gotten the bulk of the innings in the circle. She is 11-7 with 49 strikeouts on the year. Letourneau still has the league’s second best .692 slugging percentage. Alexis Cacioppo’s .600 mark ranks ninth.
The Holloway-Hill File
Head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill is in her 30th season at the helm of the Warhawks. She is joined on staff by first year assistants Ashlyn Williams and Garrett Furnal. Williams serves as pitching coach while Furnal assists with hitting and the infield.
Scouting Western Kentucky
The Lady Toppers currently rank third in the Sun Belt and carry a 6-3 league record. The squad boasts Olivia Watkins, the only player in the league with more total stolen bases than ULM’s Miyuki Navarrete (36 to Navarrete’s 30). Watkins also boasts a .474 batting average with a whopping 63 hits. Amanda Thomas has a team-best 37 RBI with a .294 average. Emily Rousseau has 159.0 innings under her belt with a 14-9 record. She has a 2.51 ERA with 125 strikeouts. WKU may lead the series 16-7, but all seven ULM wins have come in Monroe, La.
