MONROE, La. - The ULM tennis program begins its 43rd season on Friday in the TCU Spring Invite as the three-day tournament opens the Warhawks' 2017 campaign.
The Warhawks look to continue the momentum from a successful fall that saw them win titles throughout, including winning three championships of those in their home tournament at the beginning of the fall campaign.
Coming into the spring, the Warhawks feature one of the Top 10 doubles duos in the ITA's Southern Region. Senior Petra Horakova and junior Stefana Andrei are ranked ninth in the southern region as a doubles team in the ITA rankings, which features eight SEC schools in the Top 10.
As a singles player, Andrei is currently ranked tenth in the ITA Southern Region singles poll . Andrei capped off her fall with a run to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championships in mid-October.
Tiffany Mylonas and Ioana Popescu each had successful fall campaigns as singles players, with both losing only one match all fall with each taking home mulitiple flight championships. Both player won their respective flights in the Warhawk Fall Tournament that opened the fall schedule.
The Warhawks have a majority of their matches on the road this year, including a five-game road stretch which features two Sun Belt Conference contests and matches in three different states over a 12-day period. The Warhawks also play in a strong tournament field to kick off the 2017 campaign when they travel to Fort Worth to battle in the TCU Spring Invite. Teams included in the tournament include No. 6 Ohio State, No. 23 Mississippi State, No. 32 Baylor, UTEP, Texas State, Mercer and host No. 31 TCU.
Off the court, the Warhawks had a successful fall semester in the classroom as well, with multiple players receiving academic honors. Karolina Snita, Stefana Andrei and Luana Stanciu made the ULM Dean’s List while Madalina Grigoriu and Petra Horakova made the President’s List.
