ULM Takes Down Northwestern State Tuesday Night
NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Corben Green finished perfect at the plate with three hits and he reached base two other times (walk, hit by pitch) to help lead ULM to a 5-4 victory over Northwestern State Tuesday night at Brown-Stroud Field.
ULM scored the ninth and final run of the contest in the top of the ninth to claim the one-run victory. Chris Dudley led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on Brandon Alexander’s sacrifice bunt. Dudley moved to third on a wild pitch and after Bergeron drew a walk, Dudley scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Tyler Bray (2-1) earned the win in relief after allowing zero runs in 1.2 innings of work with three walks and two strikeouts. Christo Jones earned his first save in a Warhawk uniform after pitching a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.
Dudley, who scored the game-winning run in the ninth, collected three hits to aid in the Warhawk attack at Northwestern State.
Cameron Brewer (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout as he pitched the final inning of Tuesday’s contest.
ULM pushed across the first run of the contest with two outs in the top of the third as Corben Green drove in Kodie Tidwell with a RBI single to right. The Warhawks eventually loaded the bases, but a Chris Dudley fly out to right ended the ULM threat.
Northwestern State threatened in the home half of the third as they loaded the bases (all via walks) but the Demons were unable to push any runs across as Cort Brinson flied out to right to end the inning.
The Warhawks pushed its lead to 2-0 as Tidwell scored his second run of the contest in the fifth. Judd Edwards reached on a fielder’s choice as Tidwell scored thanks to a throwing error by Demon third baseman Edwin Gomez.
The homestanding Demons scored their first run of the game on a RBI single to right center by Edwin Gomez (Toby Cornejo scored) in the next half inning. Northwestern State took the lead as Justin Stawychny’s throw to short on a double steal resulted in two runs coming in to score to give the Demons a 3-2 lead in the fifth.
ULM regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Edwards led off the inning being hit by a pitch, stole second base and moved to third on Green’s single to center field. Edwards evened the contest at three-all as he crossed home plate on Taylor Abdalla’s sac fly to left. With runners on the corners and two out, Ryan Bergeron drove in Green with a RBI single to center to put ULM back on top 4-3.
The Warhawks used three pitchers in the seventh as Chet Simoneaux started the inning on the hill, followed by Chad Miller and Bray. Simoneaux gave up a double and a walk before being replaced by Miller who walked the only batter he faced. Cort Brinson evened the game at four as he scored on a Bray wild pitch. Bray avoided further damage by recording a strikeout and then a foul out to catcher following an intentional walk.
