MONROE, La. -- ULM (12-19, 2-9) starter Shelby Aulds carried a shutout into the eighth inning and the Warhawks added three late insurance runs to end No. 25 Florida Atlantic’s (21-10, 8-3) eight game winning streak with an 8-5 victory Saturday Night at Warhawk Field.
Shelby Aulds evened his season record at 3-3 as he tossed 105 pitches during his 7.2 innings of work. Aulds gave up three runs (all in the eighth) on the first homer he allowed all season. In all, FAU tallied 10 hits and one walk while striking out three times against the Warhawk right hander.
Tyler Bray closed out the game for ULM as the squad evened the weekend series at one win a piece. Despite allowing two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of work, Bray earned the first save of his Warhawk career.
ULM jumped on the Owls early as they scored four runs in the home half of the first inning. With the bases loaded and just one out, Dalton Herrington reached on a fielder’s choice as all three Warhawk base runners advanced 90 feet including Brandon Alexander who scored the game’s first run. Taylor Abdalla followed with a bases-clearing double to left center to give the Warhawks the early 4-0 lead.
The two teams traded zeros on the scoreboard until FAU broke through with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. With two runners on base, Ricky Santiago collected the first homer of the season off of Aulds as the Owls closed the gap to two runs (5-3) and forced a pitching change by the Warhawks.
ULM answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Herrington gave ULM a 6-3 advantage with a one-out, solo home run over the wall in right field. After Abdalla doubled to center field, Tidwell followed with a RBI single that found its way into the outfield after relief pitcher Jake Meiers tried to put a glove on the ball as it bounced past him. Tidwell scored the final run of the inning as he crossed home plate on a RBI single by Logan Fiasco.
With the Warhawks in front, 8-3, Florida Atlantic connected on back-to-back homers to start the ninth inning before Tyler Bray forced a pair of foul outs and a ground out to conclude Saturday’s game.
The Warhawks were led by a trio of individuals Saturday night – Abdalla (two hits, three RBI), Herrington (two RBI, two runs) and Tidwell (two hits, two runs).
Owl starter Kevin Alexander was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.The two teams will conclude the three-game conference series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Carey Taylor (Jr., RH, 1-3, 6.82 ERA) is scheduled to get the start for ULM, while FAU will counter with Jeremy Strawn (RS-Jr., RH, 2-1, 2.72 ERA).
