Green Breaks Slump as Warhawks Take Down Hilltoppers
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Corben Green snapped out of his recent slump as he collected a hit in his first three at-bats as he helped ULM claim a 3-2 victory over WKU Friday night at Nick Denes Field.
The Warhawks (17-29, 6-16) also received a solid outing from starter Cale Wine (5-7) as the redshirt senior scattered two runs and 10 hits during his 135-pitch outing Friday night. Wine walked two batters and struck out six during his seven innings on the hill. Carey Taylor shut the door on the Hilltoppers as he surrendered just one hit while fanning three to earn his first save in a Warhawk uniform.
ULM got things going early with a single run in the top of the first inning. With two outs and Judd Edwards standing on second, Justin Stawychny delivered a RBI single to the gap in right center to give ULM a 1-0 lead.
WKU (22-24, 11-11) evened things up in the home half of the third inning as Steve Hodgins came in to score on a RBI single by Scott Wilcox. The Hilltoppers threatened to take a 2-1 lead but Wilcox was gunned out at home trying to score from first on Ryan Huck’s double off of the wall in center.
The Hilltoppers took their first lead of the game, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning. Regan Flaherty scored on a RBI groundout to second by Devin Kelly to put WKU in front. The Hilltoppers wound up loading the bases with just one out but were unable to push any more runs across in the frame.
ULM regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Kodie Tidwell connected on a two-RBI single to center that allowed Stawychny and Jeff Fuller to cross home plate and put the visiting Warhawks in front, 3-2.
Tidwell’s two-RBI hit proved be the difference as Wine and Taylor combined to keep the Hilltoppers off of the scoreboard over the final three innings in the 3-2 win.
Aside from Green’s strong performance at the plate, Edwards finished with two hits and one RBI while Stawychy added two hits, one run and one RBI.
WKU’s Tanner Perkins (3-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Wilcox and Huck led the club with three hits a piece. The two teams will battle in game two tomorrow at 3 p.m. Due to the threat of rain in the Bowling Green area, fans should follow ULMWarhawks.com for updates on the middle game of three-game set.
