MONROE, La. -- Behind a pair of timely hits and strong pitching, the ULM baseball team defeated Grand Canyon, 6-3, Friday night at Warhawk Field.
Grand Canyon (0-1) struck first as Michael Pomeroy hit a solo homer over the wall in right with one out in the top of the second.
ULM (1-0) responded with five runs in the home half of the inning. Justin Stawychny got things going with a triple off of the wall in center field. After Jacob Stockton reached on an error, Kodie Tidwell was able to load the bases for the Warhawks by drawing a walk. The Antelopes appeared to be on their way to avoiding trouble by recording two strikeouts. Josh Faciane delivered a two-out, two RBI single to right to give ULM a 2-1 lead. Dalton Herrington followed and put ULM ahead 5-1 with a three-run homer over the wall in right.
Grand Canyon added a single run in the top of the fourth, but ULM again responded as Dalton Todd scored the final run of the night for ULM on a wild pitch by Grand Canyon starting pitcher Jorge Perez.
The Antelopes scored one final run in the seventh to set the final tally at 6-3 in favor of the homestanding Warhawks.
Chad Miller allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and one strikeout in four innings of work. Josh Leone (1-0) saw his first college action and allowed one run on two hits with one walk and five punchouts in four innings.
Tyler Bray earned his first save of the season as he tossed a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and fanning three.
Herrington and Faciane each recorded just one hit but the duo combined for a total of five RBI in the win Friday night.
Perez (0-1) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run (six total) on five hits and one walk. The left-hander struckout 10 in seven innings of work.
