MONROE, La. -- Senior Alex Dumaine tallied a career-best seven strikeouts and ULM held off a late Grand Canyon rally to take Saturday’s game at Warhawk Field by a score of 5-4.

The Warhawks (2-0) jumped on the scoreboard first with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jacob Stockton led off the frame with a triple to center field and later scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game.

With runners on second (Dalton Todd) and third (Kodie Tidwell), Josh Faciane collected a RBI groundout to put ULM ahead 2-0. Dalton Herrington drove in the third and final run of the inning with a RBI single through the left side.

ULM added a single run in the fourth as Herrington was able to score all the way from first when Jeff Fuller reached on a throwing error by the third baseman.

The Warhawks scored their final run of the game in the fifth as Justin Stawychny scored on Chet Simoneaux’s fielder’s choice.

Grand Canyon (0-1) scored its first run of the game in the sixth as Michael Pomeroy drove in Chad De La Guerra with a RBI single to first.

The Antelopes made things interesting in the ninth as the visitors tallied three runs off of reliever Tyler Bray. De La Guerra highlighted the inning with a two-RBI single to right as Grand Canyon closed the gap to one. Bray was able to regroup and strikeout the final two batters he faced to give the Warhawks the series win.

Starter Alex Dumaine (1-0) recorded a quality start in his first outing of 2014. The southpaw allowed six hits and one run with one walk and a career-high seven punchouts in six innings.

Carey Taylor tossed two shutout innings allowing two hits and one walk with three strikeouts, before Bray closed out the game.

Stockton and Tidwell led the Warhawks at the plate as both players went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Andrew Naderer was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (five total) on five hits and one walk in 4.1 innings. De La Guerra tallied two hits, two RBI and one run for the Antelopes.

The two teams will close out the three-game set tomorrow with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Alex Hermeling (RHP) is slated to get the start for ULM, while Grand Canyon will counter with Coley Bruns (RHP).
