Warhawks Jump on Colonels Early, Rally Late for Win

MONROE, La. -- ULM plated the first five runs of the game and when the Warhawks needed a big hit they got it in the seventh as they plated three en route to a 9-6 win over Nicholls State Wednesday night at Warhawk Field. With the win, the Warhawks even the season series as each team defended its home field in 2014.

The Warhawks (12-18) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as they scored in each of the first two innings. In the first the Warhawks struck for four runs (all earned). Justin Stawychny drove in the first run of the game with a single through the left side as Keelin Rasch came in to score. Kodie Tidwell followed with a two-RBI double down the right field line and Ross Moore concluded the first-inning scoring with a RBI single up the middle.

In the second, Josh Faciane gave the Warhawks a 5-0 lead as he moved to third on a wild pitch while catcher Christian Correa’s throw sailed into left field allowing Faciane to cross home plate.

Nicholls State (15-16) finally broke through with a single run in the top of the fifth as Charles Morton scored on a RBI groundout by Correa.

The Colonels closed to within one run as they tallied a trio of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Keith Cormier highlighted the frame with a two-RBI double to the gap in right center. An inning later, Cormier gave Nicholls State a 6-5 lead as he doubled down the left field line to cap a two-run seventh.

ULM responded with three runs of its own as the Warhawks regained the lead in the home half of the seventh. Jacob Stockton led off the inning with a single and Anthony Herrera followed with a double down the left field line. After Josh Faciane walked, Keelin Rasch evened the game at 6-6 as his fielder’s choice RBI plated Stockton. With two outs in the inning, Dalton Herrington drove in a pair with a double down the right field line to give ULM an 8-6 lead.

The Warhawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Garrett Walters tallied his first career hit with a RBI single up the middle to drive in Moore and give ULM a 9-6 lead.

Tyler Bray (3-3) earned the win in relief as he tossed three scoreless frames allowing one hit while fanning four. Stockton led the Warhawks with three hits, while Herrington and Tidwell each drove in a pair.

John Satriano (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and one walk in two-thirds of an inning. Cormier led the Colonels with two hits and three RBI.

The Warhawks will return to Sun Belt Conference action this weekend as it makes the trek west to Arlington, Texas for a three-game series against the Mavericks of UT Arlington.
