Pair of Four-Run Innings Rally ULM Past McNeese State 11-6
The Cowboys (16-15) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Warhawks (16-11) scored 11 of the game's final 13 runs to come away with the victory. Thamm pitched the final four innings of the game for ULM allowing just one run on two hits as he picked up his first save of the season.
ULM's two through five hitters all had two hits on the night -- Jeremy Sy, Caleb Clowers, Joey Rapp and Jason Hicks -- while Shane Ardoin also added a pair from the nine hole. Hicks finished with three RBIs while Matt Laird and Ardoin added a pair. The Warhawks improved to 11-1 on the season when scoring six or more runs and 12-2 when reaching double-digit hits. ULM out-hit McNeese State 14-9.
The Warhawks began to chip away at the lead in the third with a little small ball. Judd Edwards drew a lead-off walk, stole second, moved to third on a grounder to short and scored on an Ardoin ground out to short.
Eight Warhawk batters came to the plate in the fourth inning as ULM put a four-spot on the board to take a 5-4 lead. Clowers led off the frame with a single up the middle and Rapp drew one of his two walks on the night. Hicks then ripped a single down the line in left to plate Clowers. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners for Edwards who singled to right to drive home the second run of the inning.
A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third and Laird capitalized with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at four all. Ardoin then beat out an infield single which allowed Edwards to score and give the Warhawks the lead.
Lee Orr tied the game with his fourth homer of the season to lead off the McNeese half of the fifth, but the Warhawks answered back in their half of the fifth with a one-out single by Rapp after Sy led off the inning with his third triple of the season.
Orr, Granger, Nick Eubanks and Blake Ellender all had two hits for the Cowboys. Jaden Dillon (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in just four innings of work.
The Warhawks used four hits and a pair of McNeese State errors in the sixth to tack on another four runs. The Cowboys looked as they would be able to work around a one-out error which allowed Ardoin to reach after John Tatum struck out Les Aulds for the second out of the inning. However, the Warhawks put together four singles around a walk to take a 10-5 lead. ULM had six two-out RBIs in the contest after not recording any in its series against FIU this past weekend. Clowers and Joey Cesario each drove in one in the inning while a Hicks single brought home a pair.
After only scratching a single against ULM starter Brent Gay over the first two innings, the Cowboys scored four runs on four hits in the third. Granger delivered the big blow with a 3-run homer after Peterson opened the scoring with a single to left.
Gay (2-1) picked up the win for the Warhawks after he allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings of work.
The Warhawks return to Sun Belt Conference action this weekend when they host Arkansas State in a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
