INDIANAPOLIS, In. – The NCAA released the latest APR rates for all Division I teams on Wednesday, with ULM programs all turning in strong results. Nationally, Division I student-athletes improved academically for the 12th consecutive year, earning another all-time high four-year Academic Progress Rate. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
“I am proud of our student-athletes and coaches for continuing to keep academics a priority here at ULM,” Director of Athletics Brian Wickstrom said. “A big thank you also goes out to the staff and the Student Success Center for all of their hard work.”
The ULM men's golf, men's basketball and women's cross country programs were each recognized last week by the NCAA for earning multi-year Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Both men's golf and women's cross country earned perfect 1,000 APR scores, while men's basketball posted a multi-year APR of 995.
Additionally, ULM beach volleyball earned a perfect 1,000 APR score, however beach volleyball teams must have at least two years of APR data to receive recognition. Nationally, more beach volleyball teams will become eligible for the award starting with the next academic year.
Along with the multi-year APR perfect scores, ULM had eight programs – men's basketball, men's golf, women's cross country, women's golf, softball, tennis, beach volleyball and indoor volleyball – all collect perfect single year 1,000 APR scores.
“I am so pleased that the Academic Progress Rates continue to rise, but I am more excited about what those numbers mean: Thousands of college athletes continue to make real progress toward earning their degrees,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said. “A college degree, combined with the skills they learn while participating in sports, will provide countless opportunities for them later in life.”
Overall, ULM had eight programs finish with multi-year APR rates at 980 or above, and all 15 programs recorded multi-year APR rates at or above 940. The Warhawks recorded the top men's basketball APR score in the Sun Belt Conference (995) on the way to being the only SBC men's basketball school – and one of only 44 programs nationally – recognized in the top 10 percent nationally among all scores. Women's cross country (perfect 1,000 APR score) also led the SBC in their respective sport.
Both the Warhawk baseball (979 score) and football (963 score) programs ranked third in the Sun Belt with the latest APR scores, while indoor volleyball (989 score) posted the fourth-best league score and women's track (981 score) also placed them inside the top five among SBC schools.
The most recent multi-year APR numbers are multi-year based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years. Single year APRs are based on scores from the 2015-16 academic year.
