MONROE, La. - The ULM Soccer team is gearing up for the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Foley, Alabama. The Warhawks' quest for the title begins at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2 as they face off against the Trojans from Arkansas Little Rock. ULM defeated Little Rock 1-0 back when the two teams met at the ULM Soccer Complex back on Sept. 23.
The Warhawks have had a successful season under first year head coach Keyton Wheelock, going 7-8-3 overall with a 4-4-2 record in the Sun Belt. This comes on the heels of winning a combined four Sun Belt games over the last three years combined.
“This team definitely had some talent on it and there was some quality as well, but fitness was one of the big things that we looked to change in the spring. We stressed it to them over the summer to come back fit and they came back reasonably fit, but the work ethic was there. I think that has shown throughout the 2016 season,” commented Wheelock.
In a year of firsts for the ULM Soccer program, the Warhawks get set to go their first-ever Sun Belt Conference Tournament since joining the league back in 2006. The Warhawks last played in the postseason in 2005 when they made the Southland Conference Tournament. This is the sixth time the Warhawks have made a conference tournament, all previously coming in the Southland Conference, and they have a 3-5 all-time record, including coming one win short of making the Southland title game back in 2004.
ULM is led this season by Cke’Lana Caesar and Emely Portillo-Segovia, with each scoring three goals to lead the team. Danielle Sabathe and Alexandria Skidmore each had three assists during the regular season to lead that category. The Warhawks are led in goal by Brooke-Lynn Scroggins, who led the Sun Belt with 124 saves during the regular season while also adding six solo shutouts.
"Defense wins championships. With my background, I know that defense is huge and it is important to me. Our goalkeeper has been phenomenal between the pipes. She has kept us in games and we have had to call on her a little too much this season but she has had a strong backline behind her lead by some seniors and younger players" Wheelock said.
