MONROE, La. - Former Delgado
Community College and University of Houston catcher Joey Cesario has signed a
National Letter of Intent to play baseball at ULM beginning with the 2011
season, ULM head coach Jeff Schexnaider announced Tuesday.
Cesario batted .354 with 11
doubles, two triples, three home runs and 45 RBIs in 48 games and 46 starts
this past season for Delgado. The native of New Orleans, La., finished the
season with a .521 slugging percentage, a .467 on-base percentage and five
stolen bases. The Dolphins finished the year 35-20 and came up one game short
of reaching the Junior College World Series.
"Joey is a guy that should be ready to come
in and contribute right away," Schexnaider said. "He swings the bat from
the left side and has the potential to be very good both offensively and
defensively. We are very excited about what he will bring to ULM next
season."
He played in eight games and
made three starts as a freshman at Houston following a standout prep career at
Jesuit High School. He was named all-conference and all-area as a senior at Jesuit
after batting .400 with five homers, 38 RBIs and a .650 slugging percentage.
His father, Jim Cesario,
played in the Texas Rangers organization and his brother, Jimmy Cesario,
currently plays for the Colorado Rockies organization.
