MONROE, La. - ULM freshman
Judd Edwards joined an elite group of Warhawk baseball players on Monday when
he was named to the Ping!Baseball Freshman All-America Second Team. Edwards, a
native of Oxford, Ala., became the 30th All-American in ULM's
distinguished history.
Edwards started double-digit
games at three different positions in 2010 - the mark of a true utility player.
He earned 22 starts in left field, 15 at first base, 11 at shortstop, one at
second base and one as the designated hitter. Edwards batted at a .333 clip
with 11 doubles, a pair of home runs, 20 RBIs and five stolen bases in his
rookie campaign with the Warhawks.
"This is an outstanding and
well deserved accolade for Judd," ULM head coach Jeff Schexnaider said. "Judd
had a great freshman year and did everything we asked of him. He worked hard to
earn a spot in the lineup and made it where we couldn't take him out."
The two-time all-state
performer at Oxford High School was inserted into the ULM starting lineup in
the fifth game of the season and responded with a 2-for-4 performance - he
would start every game the rest of the season.
He had multiple hits in 22
different games - second best on the team - and hit safely in 42 of the 53 games
he played in, including 27-of-30 Sun Belt Conference games. He had the
game-tying and game-winning RBIs in back-to-back at-bats in the seventh and
ninth innings against Sun Belt champion Florida Atlantic and had multiple
doubles in a game on three different occasions.
Edwards' honor marks the third
straight year and the fifth time in the last six seasons that a ULM player has
earned All-America honors. Ben Soignier, who ironically wore the same number as
Edwards (3), was named an All-American in 2008 and 2009 and was the last
Warhawk to earn Freshman All-America Honors (Louisville Slugger in 2006). ULM
pitcher Matt Green was named an All-American by four different organizations in
2005.
