BEAUMONT, Texas – The ULM women’s tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 5-2 victory on Sunday (Feb. 7) at Lamar. The Warhawks earned four singles victories as well as the doubles point to remain perfect during the dual meet season.
In singles action, ULM won the matches at third through sixth singles as junior Claire Clark, sophomore Monica Winkel, junior Vivian Polak and junior Ana Burjaili all picked up victories. At third singles, Clark cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Manijee Ashrafi while at fifth singles Polak also claimed a decisive victory, 6-1, 6-3, over Natalia Mayagoitia.
Burjaili battled through a tough three-set match at sixth singles, picking up a victory over Manami Kuroda, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Winkel earned a win in fourth singles due to a retirement by Lamar’s Diana Mendez. Winkel was leading the match 6-4, 4-3 when Mendez retired.
In the other singles matches, senior Lena Satge fell at first singles, 6-2, 6-1, to Mariayeni Gutierrez and freshman Sidney Bruscato lost to Kaltrina Harbuzi, 6-1, 6-3, at second singles.
Earlier in doubles play, Clark and Winkel earned an 8-3 victory over Kuroda and Harbuzi in third doubles action. Burjaili and Polak ensured the doubles point for ULM with an 8-6 decision over Mendez and Mayagoitia at second doubles.
In the other doubles match, Satge and sophomore Jourdan Smith fell to Ashrafi and Gutierrez, 8-0.
The Warhawks will return to action this weekend with another pair of matches. ULM will travel to Alcorn State on Thursday (Feb. 11) for a 1:30 p.m. match against the Braves. The Warhawks will then host their first match of the season at Heard Stadium on Friday (Feb. 12) when they take on Stephen F. Austin at 1:30 p.m.
