BATON ROUGE -Following a stellar first season as a Warhawk
for the ULM volleyball team, Zuzana Markova was recognized with a spot on the
All-Louisiana College Volleyball second team as announced by the Louisiana
Sports Writer Association Saturday evening.
Markova is the first Warhawk to earn an All-Louisiana nod in
five seasons after Ilima Sam Fong was an honorable mention and Newcomer of the
Year in 2006. She is one of just six ULM players all-time to be recognized by
the LSWA.
The junior setter was a key component to ULM's breakout
season in 2011 in which it went 10-16 and 4-10 in the Sun Belt Conference,
reaching double-digits in wins for the first time since 2005 and just the
second time in 21 years. The Warhawks also won a program record four matches in
Sun Belt play, doubling the amount of matches won over the past four seasons
combined since joining the league.
The native of Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic, amassed a
school-record 12 triple-doubles and 18 double-doubles in 26 matches, earning a start
in each and played all 104 sets. She led the Warhawks in both assists and kills
this season with 4.45 assists and 2.88 kills per set after amassing 463 and
300, respectively, to average a double-double for 2011. She ended the year
ranked eighth in the Sun Belt for kills.
Markova was a key component all-around for ULM as she also
collected 2.40 digs per set to average a triple-double for a majority of the
season. After a string of four-straight triple-double performances early in the
year she earned the program's first-ever American Volleyball Scouting Report
Player of the Week nod.
LSU and Northwestern State dominated the overall All-Louisiana awards
this year as three Tigers and two Demons landed on the first team. Player of
the Year honors went to Madie Jones from LSU while Stacey DiFrancesco from Northwestern
State is Freshman of the Year. Demon Keelie Arneson and Tiger Meghan Mannari were named co-Libero
of the Year. Stephanie Salas from Louisiana Tech is the Newcomer of the Year
and Xavier head coach Christabell Hamilton is Coach of the Year.
