ULM Softball Falls to Troy, 7-2; Weekend Series Tied, 1-1

MONROE, La. – Taylor McKinney and Libby Baker each drove in three runs and Olivia Cato scattered four hits over seven innings as Troy defeated ULM, 7-2, Saturday to even up the weekend Sun Belt Conference series at one game apiece.
 
Cato pitched around two singles, a walk and an error while stranding four base runners to keep ULM off the scoreboard through the first three innings.
 
ULM starting pitcher Maddie Nichols worked into the fourth inning, but hit lead-off batter Audra Thompson on a 3-0 pitch and Kennedi Gaton followed with a single through the right side of the infield. After the first two hitters reached, Gianni Hulett relieved Nichols in the circle. A sacrifice bunt by Katelynn de Leon advanced Thompson to third base and Gaton to second. Jade Sinness gave Troy a 1-0 lead, driving an 0-2 offering into left field for an RBI single that scored Thompson from third. After D'Aun Riggs drew a nine-pitch walk to load the bases, McKinney cleared the bases with a three-run double to right center as the Trojans built a 4-0 advantage.
 
Kennedy Page put the Warhawks on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, hitting her first home run of the season and eighth of her career over the left-field wall on an 0-1 pitch from Cato.
 
Troy (22-9-1, 3-1-1 Sun Belt) broke the game open in the top of the sixth. Kassidy Giddens, who became ULM's fourth pitcher of the afternoon, issued a five-pitch walk to Sinness to open the frame. After a groundout, McKinney drew a six-pitch walk and Baker followed with a three-run blast to left-center field as the Trojans took a 7-1 lead.
 
After ULM's first two batters were retired in the bottom of the sixth, Campbell Selman hit a solo home run to left field to account for the final margin.
 
The Trojans outhit ULM, 9-4, with McKinney (2-for-3) and Baker (2-for-4) going a combined 4-for-7 with six RBI.
 
ULM (19-13, 3-2) recorded its second multi home run game of the season – its first since Feb. 24 against Cleveland State in the Green & Gold Classic in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
Cato (4-4) allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
Nichols went three-plus innings and permitted two runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout. Hulett (7-4), who worked only one-third of an inning and took the loss, surrendered two runs on two hits with one walk. Adrianna Chavarria pitched 1 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Kassidy Giddens threw the last two innings and allowed three runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout.
 
ULM and Troy will play the rubber game of the series Sunday, March 25 at 10 a.m. With a 60-percent chance of rain in the forecast, the series finale was moved up two hours from the original start time of 12 p.m.
